Welcome to the Course!
Welcome to the Fundamentals of Dog Training and Obedience Mini Course
Understanding the foundations of Dog Training, Handling and Obedience - and why dogs do what they do - is an important part of ensuring the safety of dogs and their handlers in many canine related fields of employment. This course looks at how we can work safely with dogs, how we can relate to dogs and how we can in turn train dogs using the correct equipment, and the most up to date methods and techniques.
Dog groomers, animal handlers, boarding kennels, day care centres and anyone working with dogs need to understand and recognise subtle signs of a dog's mental state and the behaviour that may come from it. Recognising a dog's behaviour and essentially reading their next move is vital when working with any dog to prevent a situation from developing into a disaster.
Dog training and handling plays an especially important role in grooming to ensure that while any dog is in your care, they are as happy and stress free as possible. A dog who is happy, well trained and has good manners makes every task more enjoyable and rewarding.
Understanding dogs and how their minds work highlights just how remarkable these creatures really are. Pairing the basics of dog training with gentle but assertive handling will give you the best start when entering this fabulous industry.

RUBRICS: WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY DO I NEED ONE?
A rubric is a set of criteria that define how you will be assessed on your assignments. You will find there is a separate rubric for each assignment you need to complete throughout your igroomhub course.
You will receive your rubric for each assignment before you are required to submit it, so you can refer to the assessment criteria when completing the assignment. This ensures you know exactly what knowledge and evidence we are looking for when we are assessing you, and you can include it in your submission.
The reason we use rubrics in assessment is to guarantee that everyone is being assessed in the same way, and that there is no bias in how you are assessed. This also means that different assessors can mark assignments in the same way using the rubric, and you – as a student – will receive a mark that is not subject to personal preferences and subjectivity.
HOUSEKEEPING
When you have finished a lecture, press the Complete and Continue bar at the top right of the screen. To be able to move on to the next lecture, you need to score 85% on the quiz at the end of the lecture. You also need to watch all of the embedded videos in their entirity, or the platform will not let you move on. If you get into trouble and cannot progress, ensure your browser is running at the latest version (Firefox and Chrome work best for this platform) and your device is up to date - it's worth trying another device to see if you can eliminate that problem.
